[79] NJ 56678 00595 Dess Waterfall (E side)

8/11/07 Gary . Like Dave below Hannah was orienteering here so I ran around the woods and got this point. The fall looked impressive as it had been very wet recently. As I drove to Jon and Sarah's house it wasn't very far to run to get here.

Was round at Jon and Sarah's collecting orienteering controls and thought I might as well also collect a challenge point. Actually ran in from the north because I thought it was shorter, but it probably isn't. There is a track off the Dess road about 1km north of the north Deeside road, it goes up to a big forestry shed. Turn right off it and keep right wherever you have the choice, and you'll soon end up on the path that goes high above the east side of the burn, with a great view of the falls. It's remarkable how few people know the waterfall exists. In a few years it might not because there is a plan for a hydro scheme here. Go and see it before it's too late.

Ewan claimed his first point today, and unlike Derek and Evelyn he walked in the long way from Gardens Cottage (a good spot for a cuppa when you go for the waterfall).

On the way back from training at Glen Tanar . I guess we were meant to blag this one via the 'official' scenic route but that would have been the long way around and we would have been above the falls. We decided on the short cut from the 'unofficial' layby on the road over to the Activity Centre. Not recommended since it means a scramble down a litter-strewn bank and a wade in the river to get to the E side
