I ran up here in the dark just before dawn on my way into town, a great point to see the sunrise from with wide open views over to mt. keen, lochnagar and morven.

Parked near the church in Lumphanan and ran up the brae before turning left onto the track over the top of Glenshalg Hill. Dropped down to the Tarland Rd and crossed straight over onto the Clasholm track. Took a fairly direct line to the top, which probably wasn't the best. I had a lucky escape from a nasty accident when I slipped whilst astride a gate with barbed wire along the top - somehow both myself and my tights emerged unscathed. I also had to cross an electric fence (I didn't fancy checking whether it was on or not, so did a belly slither underneath instead). Returned by a more sensible route initially following the track off the top. Returned to Lumphanan via the Old Military Rd and point No [80].

I was confused too, as it seemed more obvious to go straight on at the farm and up the track to the field corner (that's the way I came down). Anyway I did go their way and got very wet feet along the fenceline - go Dave's way if the track is dry enough. Great view from the top and a hill I would not normally have thought of going up. I combined this with 80 from Lumphanan so the whole run took 1 hour 35 mins. (not very fast but it was 21 degrees with no wind which is too hot for me).

I was a bit confused by D+E's instructions here. Took the track to Clashholm, which goes downhill for a surprisingly long way, then took the path to the right of the building which may be the one which they said to resist. It is perfectly good however, at least when it is dry, and goes right the way to the top, through the small plantation. Came back the way they suggest. Took 20 mins up and the same down which must say something. I would be interested to know anything about why the enormous cairn was built here - it isn't even at the summit.

Derek and Evelyn get off to a good start by ticking off the control nearest their doorstep. A clear track leads from the B9119 down to the abandoned farm at Clasholm. Just before the farm, turn left up the rise - resist the temptation to head across the rushy area - and follow the most obvious set of tracks up to the fence line. Turn sharp right and follow the fence/wall all the way to the top.
It gets windy as you climb - there's a brief lull as you go through a small wood but after this you hit the main climb and its very exposed. Make sure you have a windproof.
