[76] NJ 52948 00815 Queen's Hill

Click for map

15/09/07 Dave and Kathy. Started from the Tarland road just before it descends to Aboyne, at 520000. There is an obvious track down the hill from here, but don't take it, it goes nowhere. Instead take a much less distinct track along the edge of the trees that goes down to a bridge over the Tarland Burn. From here the route is pretty obvious. Still not sure where the top of the hill really is, we went to the nearest top to the corner of the deer fence at 529010, whichis more or less where the point is marked on the map. Kathy had to climb a fire tower to try to spot the summit. There is lots of lichen in the woods, which is quite pretty if you look closely.

Nipped up here after Mortlich with Gary, who hadn't realised there was such an easy point to bag on the way back to his car. Navigated from the corner of the deer fence neatly in to what I believe to be the top - there was a small cairn, now almost hidden in bracken.

Did we or didn’t we?
The last day of April and beautiful weather, so we got the bikes out and headed for Coull. We turned off at NJ 513 025 and climbed a track towards Queen’s Hill. The track is very bumpy, looks like it has recently been re-graded for forestry operations. Shortly after the dog-leg shown on the OS map is a wooden gate and a heather-covered track to the top of the hill. The GPS shows the Challenge Point to be about 60 metres inside a deer-fence. We walked around part pf the boundary but never seemed to get any closer. We had originally passed a lookout high-chair and eventually decided to declare that to be the Challenge Point. Dave mentioned seeing a cairn but we never saw it –but then he did attack the hill from another direction.
At this point I got out the camera-phone (chosen for lightness over our proper camera) only to find it was out of charge. So, we’ll have to leave it to someone else to get a photo of the high-chair. There’s not much of a view, even from the lookout, due to the high tree level, but it’s an unusual spot that you wouldn’t normally visit and worth the detour. We came back out at NJ 512 009 which is closer if you want the shortest route

Turned right and headed for Tomnaverie.

Came up here with Jon on the way back from Mortlich. Should have been on the way out but we missed the summit. Good running in the woods but not much of a view. There is a small cairn which is probably the highest point. Nothing but trees really, some of which you can fall over.

How did you know Jon was about to fall over this tree? Perhaps you tied his laces together!

He's always falling over trees. It comes from all the orienteering. Every time I see Jon near an obstacle of some sort I get out my camera just in case.
