The last of my three points today. Headed down through the terrain from the top of Pannanich. Intended to bring my O map, but didn't find time to dig it out, so I crossed my fingers and tried map memory. To my amazement I popped out of the trees just by the track junction below the top of Creag Coillich - very satisfying.

Came here on the way back from Sgor Mor and thought I ought to put a bit more training in, given last night's disaster at Cambus. Parked in Ballater because there's no parking on the south Deeside road near the path up the hill. Short but steep run up. Took 9 mins up and 5 back down. Good view over Ballater and out to Morven from the top.

Gary came up with a great route at Ballater for the last evening handicap of the season. Starting from the small Forest Enterprise car park at the eastern end of Pannanich Hill, the waymarked track runs westwards back along the edge of the forest, cutting across the Ballater Hill race path and gradually climbing before starting a steep climb up towards the mast. Its a long stiff climb, much like the far end of our regular Glen Tanar route - only longer. Since the mast is a Challenge point and only fifty meters off the circular path, we decided to include it in the route and bag a group point. Beyond the mast and on the downwards section lungs get a breather but it now starts to become very technical with lots of boulders, slippery twists and turns, and trees. Most hazards were avoided (often narrowly) but Peter twisted his ankle and Sam argued with a tree - inevitably affecting their times. All back safe and sound, with some close finishes for those running to their handicaps - well done. Finally, thanks to Warren for timekeeping and photography, much appreciated.

With Hannah at drumming I had a spare hour to grab a challenge point. Took my bike and cycled up Craig Coillich. Well I might have attempted to cycle it but the second helping of Rhubarb Crumble I had just had was saying otherwise! So I pushed up the land rover track which is very steep. Originally I was going to come down the single track Ballater hill race route. However after about 50m I was too scared so came back down the land rover track.

There would be a good circular route you could do here.
