[35] NJ 26647 00680 Cnoc Chalmac

05/06/07 Karen, Jo, Sheila and Malcolm. Cycled from Ballater, leaving bikes just past the farm and then on foot to the top. Back the same way

12/08/08 Dave and Kathy.
This was part 3 of our tour of upper Gairnside. Came here from the Gairn shiel via points 37 and 38.Took the path on the N side of the river W from the bridge, past the ruin in the picture then on to the bridge below Tullochmacarrick. The path is a bit boggy in parts but mostly good riding. Crossed the bridge, went R then L at 271015 up the (rideable) path which almost goes to the top of the hill. Got off the bikes at the highest point, where there are lots of ruins overgrown with juniper. Very short walk to the top from here. There are ruins and old fields all around - there must have been a substantial population here once. That must have been before global warming when the weather was better. Good views of Ben Avon and Lochnagar, and lots of other hills. The path E down to the main track is fun. Met a 4x4 full of people on "safari". They had probably spotted us from the road and dashed over to take some photos.

The whole trip took us about 3 hours, which is remarkably slow for 11 miles, but the going was never very good.
